The World Cup champion harshly questioned the presence of the Mexican forward among the nominees: "Do they include Julian Quiñones? But what did he do at the World Cup? Four goals for Mexico and eliminated in the round of 16? When I saw that, I wondered if it was a joke. It is very harmful to football, because it is a team sport. People think much more about winning the Ballon d'Or than about collective awards. You can win a Champions League with your team and only think about yourself. We are talking about statistics again, but that is not enough. Football is not just about statistics. Since the Messi-Ronaldo era, I don't even look at that trophy anymore.
