Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Atlético Madrid

Zlatan Ibrahimovic spoke on CBS Sports about the situation at Atlético Madrid, arguing they would have been much stronger if they had simply sold Julián Álvarez to Barcelona instead of keeping him. The core argument is that when a player is no longer happy, you let them go rather than forcing them to stay while hoping loyalty appears by magic. A footballer who no longer wants to be there ends up contaminating the group, and Zlatan insists that was exactly what happened with this specific case. The result was a team lacking fire, joy, and ideas, dragging a problem across the entire pitch without any real fix. Gil Marín's ego was too big to let Álvarez leave, and that pride ended up costing Atlético far more than any transfer fee ever could. Football is simple: if a player's head is already in another city, your team is already weaker. You can talk about dignity all summer long, but dignity does not generate pressure, does not define outcomes, and does not win matches. They took a striker playing with hunger and turned him into a hostage through sheer obstinacy. That is how you ruin a striker, and it has nothing to do with tactical setups or formation changes.
