Mark Wahlberg Chevy Chase story

The lesson Mark Wahlberg carries about fan interactions traces back to a specific moment in Beverly Hills involving Chevy Chase. While visiting Los Angeles with a childhood friend, Wahlberg spotted the actor and recognized him immediately from his work on Saturday Night Live and films like Vacation. That recognition sparked excitement because Chase was one of the first famous people he ever saw. Wahlberg describes the encounter: "I see this guy, I'm like, 'Hey!' I wave to him. I'm like, 'Oh my god, what's up?' He goes, 'F*** you!'" The rejection stung deeply given how much Wahlberg admired Chase growing up. Years later, the dynamic shifted while filming The Big Hit in Toronto. Someone informed Wahlberg that a famous actor had seen Boogie Nights and wanted to meet him. When the visitor arrived, it was identified as Chevy Chase. Chase claimed he would remember meeting Wahlberg if they had met before, stating, "No, we met before." To which Chase replied, "No, I would remember. I mean, I'm a big fan." Wahlberg then reminded Chase of their prior encounter, explaining the earlier rejection hurt because he had grown up watching Chase. This experience taught him to always make time for fans interested in his work. He says this led to a firm resolve: "It actually made me want to make sure that anybody who was ever interested in anything that I did remotely, that I was gonna give them the time of day."
