JOSÉ MARIA GIMENEZ career story

Spanish observers often point to bad luck whenever JOSÉ MARIA GIMENEZ suffers an injury or makes a mistake, yet he counters that claim by telling them if they only knew what good fortune he actually carries. That perspective is rooted in his history starting at age 17 when he played for the first team in the Tercera division without earning any salary or holding a contract. The club covered only bus ticket costs while his father worked and owned a small motorbike for commuting and his mother remained a homemaker. His sister became pregnant at age 14 within a family described as humble with low income. Faced with the impending birth, Giménez decided to take responsibility for his unborn child and planned to quit football to find employment and support his family. He informed his representatives about this situation, prompting them to travel 500 kilometers to meet him within three and a half hours. They persuaded him to continue football citing it as his passion instead of leaving the sport. Later that year he signed with Atleti.
