El Niño forecast WMO February 2027

WMO says it has never been this certain about El Niño before. Forecast models show a near 100 percent chance the event sticks around until February 2027, which is the first time they've put it that bluntly. Pacific surface waters are sitting 2.2 to 2.6 degrees Celsius above normal right now. Below the surface in some spots, anomalies are pushing past 8 degrees Celsius. This follows a natural cycle but the intensity is outside historical norms. Impacts depend on where you live: Australia and Indonesia are looking at drought and fire risks while East Africa and the southern United States expect heavier rainfall. Global temperatures are projected to stay elevated through 2027.
