U.S. states living in birth state 2024

The U.S. Census Bureau (2024) just released a full ranking of all 50 states based on how many people still call their birth state home, and the gap between the top and bottom is massive. Louisiana sits at the very top with 74% of residents remaining in their birth state, while Nevada holds the lowest spot on the list. Michigan comes in second at 72%, followed closely by Ohio at 71%. Mississippi records 67% staying put, whereas Pennsylvania and Wisconsin both show 66%. Iowa's figure lands at 65%, and West Virginia reports 64%. Kentucky stands at 63%, while Alabama, Indiana, and Minnesota each have 62%. Illinois shows 61%, Missouri reports 60%, and Nebraska has 57%. South Dakota, North Dakota, and New York all report 56%, with Arkansas and Maine each having 54%. Oklahoma, Kansas, and Massachusetts each report 53%, Utah shows 52%, and Tennessee and Texas both record 50%. California reports 48%, Connecticut, Hawaii, and Rhode Island each have 47%, and North Carolina and Georgia both show 46%. The data reveals that for most Americans, the place they were born is still where they live.
