U.S. Poverty Rate by State 2024

U.S. Census Bureau just dropped the 2024 state-level poverty rates and the gap is real. Louisiana leads at 18.7%, followed by West Virginia sitting at 16.7%. Kentucky rounds out the next tier at 15.6% before Alabama hits 15.2%. New York comes in at 14.0%, Tennessee at 13.4%, and Ohio lands at 12.7%. Florida shows 12.0%, Arizona sits at 11.7%, and Iowa is at 11.3%. Kansas follows with 10.9%, Wisconsin at 10.3%, and Hawaii right on 10.0%. Maryland drops to 9.0%, leaving New Hampshire with the lowest rate on this list at 7.2%. Data is ranked from highest to lowest poverty percentage among the listed states. The list includes states with rankings 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 14, 20, 23, 27, 29, 34, 39, 47, and 50.
