Shailene Woodley Mary Jane Watson cut

The sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that would have carried out the plan for Mary Jane Watson never actually got produced. Before that project was scrapped, Shailene Woodley had already filmed roughly three scenes with Andrew Garfield in the second installment. About a year after wrapping those shots, the production team let her know she wouldn't be appearing in the final version of the movie. The studio explained they had introduced a bunch of new characters in the previous film and needed to wait on whatever unfolded between Emma and Andrew first. Their specific reasoning involved holding off on bringing back Mary Jane until after Emma's character died, a move they felt made sense at the time given the story direction. Despite the logic behind delaying her introduction to see how things played out, that follow-up film never came to be.
