The sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that would have carried out the plan for Mary Jane Watson never actually got produced. Before that project was scrapped, Shailene Woodley had already filmed roughly three scenes with Andrew Garfield in the second installment. About a year after wrapping those shots, the production team let her know she wouldn't be appearing in the final version of the movie. The studio explained they had introduced a bunch of new characters in the previous film and needed to wait on whatever unfolded between Emma and Andrew first.
