Dr. Shabir Ally, an Islamic scholar in Canada, claims those four wives are slaves too, just with higher status. Some interpreters say a woman's main job is fulfilling her husband's sexual needs so she cannot refuse. That even allows forcing himself on a wife because it is his right. Women in marriage historically held fewer rights than expected today, even within the Islamic context. When full rights are missing, that lack is close to the position of slavery.
