Gege Akutami Tite Kubo interview

A conversation that has resurfaced from the 2021 'Jujutsu Kaisen Official Fanbook' brings together Gege Akutami (JUJUTSU KAISEN) and Tite Kubo (BLEACH) for a candid exchange regarding character design choices, specifically focusing on female representation within the series. The discussion kicks off with Kubo making a direct observation about the roster of women in Jujutsu Kaisen, stating that none of them fit his personal type because they are all formidable figures instead. He goes on to suggest that when characters of the opposite sex receive preferential treatment in a story, it usually reflects the creator's own tastes, leading him to imply that this specific archetype must be what Akutami-sensei prefers. In response, Akutami admits he sucks at drawing women and explains that he has put the brakes on creating so-called 'ladylike' characters as a result of that self-awareness. Kubo then points out an interesting pattern where male characters come in all types but the women largely fit the same mold, asking if there is an aversion to creating female characters who conform to gender roles. When pressed further on whether he lacks a preference for the 'strong female' archetype, Akutami clarifies that it is not as if he prefers any archetypes in particular. He adds that if you were to ask him about his favorite female characters, he would freeze up completely. Beyond that, he states he does not know if readers even want to see any ladylike or seductive female characters coming from him, suggesting uncertainty about audience demand for that style.
