Penélope Cruz career overview

Penélope Cruz launched her acting career as a teenager in Spain. When she was 15, she competed against approximately 300 other girls for a spot at a talent agency. Although the agency initially rejected her for being too young, she ultimately won the audition. This victory led to early work in music videos and on Spanish television. Her feature-film debut arrived in 1992 with Jamón, Jamón, a project directed by Bigas Luna. The movie served as her breakthrough role, introducing her to audiences across Spain. For this performance, she received a Goya nomination for Best New Actress. During that same year, Cruz also starred in Belle Époque. That film later won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. She continued to build her professional reputation throughout the 1990s. A significant part of this period involved working with acclaimed director Pedro Almodóvar on Live Flesh and All About My Mother. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, she began crossing over into Hollywood. Her appearances in these markets included roles in The Hi-Lo Country, All the Pretty Horses, Blow, and Vanilla Sky. What began with a teenage audition and a breakout part in Spanish cinema eventually transformed Cruz into an internationally recognized actress.
