J. Robert Oppenheimer Bhagavad Gita quote

The line "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds" is inextricably bound to J. Robert Oppenheimer following his observation of the first atomic detonation at the Trinity test. This famous quote pulls directly from Chapter 11, Verse 32 of the Bhagavad Gita, a revered Hindu scripture. In that specific passage, the deity Krishna reveals his universal form to the warrior Arjuna, a vision that fills Arjuna with a mix of deep reverence and terror. Oppenheimer was well versed in various philosophical and spiritual texts, including this ancient work, and reportedly recalled these words while watching the initial explosion. The statement has since become a defining element of his legacy, capturing his reflection on the catastrophic potential of the weapon he helped create. By citing this verse, he expressed the immense gravity and lasting impact of that scientific milestone. The sheer destructive force released by the bomb highlighted the devastating capability of nuclear arms, leading Oppenheimer to deeply consider his part in their development. His allusion to the Bhagavad Gita marks a profound moment of introspection regarding the moral weight associated with his contributions to science
