Trump discusses Canada Mexico trade deals

Donald Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland that a deal with Canada is close while talks with Mexico are underway, both designed to favor the United States. He noted he has dealt with the Prime Minister of Canada and maintains a good relationship, adding that the agreement is moving along. He also stated they are starting on a new deal with Mexico which would be much better for the United States. Previously, Trump replaced NAFTA with USMCA before reopening separate bilateral talks with each neighbor. Goals for these deals include more U.S. content in cars, tougher barriers against China, and smaller trade deficits. While such bilateral arrangements give Washington more leverage, they risk fracturing supply chains built across North America. The remarks occurred while en route to South Carolina.
