James Rodriguez Real Madrid jersey

"I dreamed of playing at the Bernabéu, and one day I was already signing a contract with Florentino." James Rodríguez reflects on the path that took him from a skinny kid in Medellín to the white jersey of Real Madrid. At 14, he debuted in the first division with Envigado. He describes himself back then as short, thin, and wearing a child's face, but possessing a cool head and ready feet. He knew that physical collisions with adults would end badly for him, so he adapted. He learned to play fast, release the ball quickly, and move with intelligence. He was never the fastest athlete on the pitch, but he always thought faster than everyone else. Two years later, at 16, he traveled alone to Argentina to join Banfield. It was an unknown city where the football was hard, defined by hits without the ball and constant elbowing. That environment taught him endurance. He chose never to respond with violence, answering aggression with football instead. The locals noticed: "This one doesn't talk, this one plays," they said. And they were right. Europe arrived when he was 19, bringing him to Porto. He found a different world there, characterized by faster circulation, more tactical discipline, and higher technical demands. But technique was something he always had, so the adaptation was not a problem. Monaco served as the final step before his big leap onto the global stage. That leap happened at the World Cup in Brazil 2014. He scored six goals, winning the Golden Boot. His strike against Uruguay, featuring a chest control and a volley into the corner, became the goal of the tournament. In the middle of that competition, Jorge Mendes called him with a message: "James, Real Madrid wants you." The meeting with Florentino Pérez came with a defining question: "Do you want glory or do you want money?" James chose glory. Always. Back in 2013, he had written that he dreamed of stepping on the Bernabéu. By 2014, he was doing it as a Real Madrid player. His first season delivered 17 goals and 18 assists. He shared the locker room with giants like Cristiano, Ramos, Benzema, Modrić, Kroos, and Bale. He was at the top of the game, but he also faced the other side of fame: unfair criticism, rumors, and lies. People claimed he didn't train or take care of himself. It wasn't true. He trained hard and looked after his body, but he never responded to the noise publicly. He preferred to answer on the pitch. Zidane was his idol, and Carlo Ancelotti was his support. With Ancelotti, he always played, whether in Madrid, Bayern, or Everton. The coach trusted him and saw something special. He also played under Zidane, though not always in the biggest matches. Today, at 33 years old, James has played in Colombia, Argentina, Portugal, France, Germany, Spain, Greece, Qatar, Brazil, and Mexico. The hunger remains. His daughter once told him, "Dad, play until 39." When he sees her shouting from the stands, he knows it is not yet time to stop. He shared an era with Messi and Cristiano, two beings out of this world. That is why he does not have a Ballon d'Or. But in 2014, he finished eighth, standing among monsters like Iniesta, Neymar, Suárez, and Robben. He was there. He never forgets where he came from: the street in Medellín, the broken shoes, the worn-out ball, and the huge dream of becoming someone. And he became someone. He achieved it.
