Nichole Ayers gigantic jet International Space Station

A year back, astronaut Nichole Ayers snapped the sharpest view from orbit of a gigantic jet. This isn't your standard lightning bolt. We are talking about a massive burst of upper-atmospheric electricity that rockets up to 60 miles (100 km) into the sky in mere fractions of a second. These quick flashes are more than just a light show. They help researchers get a better grip on our atmosphere and the intense electrical activity occurring above thunderstorms. Each rare sighting moves us closer to cracking the code on these mysterious events. The shot was taken looking down from the International Space Station, capturing the phenomenon in stunning detail. #Space
