Jim Johnston on wrestling themes

Jim Johnston is dead set against wrestlers picking commercial songs for their entrance themes, calling the whole move self-defeating and noting it almost never works out. His argument rests on music being pure emotion; swapping in a pop track just ties the wrestler to whatever that song originally meant instead of building their own identity. He points out the distraction factor: if your theme was playing the first night a guy slept with his girl, fans are suddenly thinking about sleeping with a girlfriend rather than the wrestler stepping into the ring. When you come out, the goal is for people to only be thinking of you, because that is the only thing in the universe you want them feeling. That level of focus happens with Undertaker or Stone Cold where nobody is lost in other songs or past experiences but focused entirely on what Steve Austin is doing tonight or in the moment and excitement. If part of your mind and heart drifts off remembering 'Oh yeah I remember that song,' Jim thinks it's dumb.
