The Prestige vs The Illusionist 2006

Ever catch yourself thinking Wait… haven't I seen this before? Sometimes Hollywood gives us two different movies with the same basic idea. Take The Prestige (2006) and The Illusionist (2006). These stories track rival magicians locked in a cycle of secrets, deception, and obsession. Men in both films push to extreme lengths just to outsmart their rivals while guarding the truth behind their biggest illusions. Even though they travel different paths, themes of rivalry, sacrifice, and mystery make them feel remarkably similar. Then look at Friends with Benefits (2011) and No Strings Attached (2011). Two friends start out agreeing to keep things purely physical. They think they can enjoy the arrangement without real feelings until emotions mess everything up. Different characters and stories but they share almost the same romantic formula.
