Jorge Mendes on Cristiano Ronaldo transfer

Jorge Mendes, the former representative of Cristiano Ronaldo, recalls the pivotal transfer saga from 2003. At that time, Ronaldo had just one year remaining on his contract with Sporting. Mendes fielded serious interest from Juventus, Inter Milan, Milan, Real Madrid, BARCELONA, and Valencia. Every single club wanted him, but their terms were identical: keep the teenager at Sporting for one more season before he joined them the following year. Contracts were being drawn up, and one specific offer included an 8 million fee for the agent. Mendes notes that any other representative might have accepted the payout immediately. Instead, he called Ronaldo to emphasize that his career trajectory mattered far more than immediate money. The deadlock broke when Sir Alex Ferguson stepped in. He asked Mendes to hand over the player, promising that Ronaldo would feature in at least 50% of matches if the deal went through. That guarantee became the deciding factor. Ronaldo joined Manchester United at 18 years old. For Mendes, this sequence proves that nothing is impossible.
