Willian Pacho The Players' Tribune letter

Willian Pacho wrote a letter for The Players' Tribune that hits deep. The PSG defender revisits the year 2019, when he traveled to see his mother during her cancer fight. She had gotten so thin, yet she met him with the words, "I'm fine." He spent the night beside her, silently crying as she slept. Before heading back to his club, he considered taking a photo with her but held back, thinking there would be another moment. Months later, the call came that he'd be making his professional debut. He tried reaching his mother, but she didn't answer; the evening prior she had mentioned feeling very tired. By morning, his phone was flooded with calls and messages. His mother was gone. His family made the decision to shield him from the news so he could chase his dream. Pacho took the field, left it all out there, and the match finished 0-0. Afterward, his coach led him to a room where his father and brother-in-law were waiting. That's when he learned the truth: his mother had died that morning. "Everyone knew all day. Everyone. My coach, my family… They hadn't told me anything so I could fulfill my dream. They thought that's what she would have wanted." Pacho broke down in tears. He achieved his lifelong dream on the day his mother wasn't there to witness it.
