Angel Di Maria still remembers the first real thing he bought when the money started coming in: a black Peugeot 206. The cash came from the Libertadores prize pot after a breakout debut season, and he walked it right out of the dealership. One problem, he had no clue how to drive. His dad had to get it home while Di Maria waited, friends already gathered outside, because he'd been telling them about the car and couldn't just stand there staring at it. A mate jumped in with him and said, "Come on, get in, I'll teach you right now." They went around the block, the car stalling at every corner, jerking and revving, Di Maria convinced he was about to wreck the whole thing. His friend kept him calm: "Relax, Angelito, it's normal, at the next corner it won't stall on you anymore." He spent the day killing the engine and firing it back up, learning through lurches and laughter. The Peugeot was low with a sporty feel, and to him it meant the leap from struggle to owning something that was his, even if he couldn't work the gears yet, it felt like finally getting behind the wheel of his own path.
