Kiersten Miles liver donation to Talia Rosko

Kiersten Miles was 22 and in college in New Jersey when she took a summer babysitting job for the Rosko family in 2016. About three weeks in, she learned their daughter Talia had biliary atresia, a rare liver disease that blocks bile ducts and can be fatal by age two without a transplant. Kiersten didn’t just sympathize, she researched living liver donation, found out her blood type O matched, and volunteered to get tested. The Roskos were cautious at first; it’s a huge surgery. But Kiersten was determined, and her mom supported her decision. After a battery of tests, in early 2017 she donated a portion of her liver to Talia at a hospital in Philadelphia. The surgery took many hours, and both recovered well, livers regenerate, so the piece she gave grew back. The family calls her an angel, and Kiersten says it was “a small sacrifice compared to saving a life,” adding she’d do it again if she could.
