Visa to Buy BioCatch for $2.4B
Visa is laying $2.4 billion in cash on the table for BioCatch, a behavioral biometrics firm that quietly pulls over 3,000 data points per session: keystroke timing, finger pressure, swiping style, device angle, hesitation before typing, and signals that suggest someone is being coerced. The thing already runs 19 billion sessions a month across 350 banks in 21 countries, reaching 1.8 billion devices and 760 million people. And now it'll sit on top of Visa's network, which ties together nearly 14,500 financial institutions and pushes over 329 billion transactions a year worth more than $17 trillion. That turns behavioral profiling into payment-rail infrastructure. Just a few months back, Visa cut roughly 2,600 jobs, about 7% of its workforce, with CEO Ryan McInerney citing AI, and the savings got funneled into value-added services, the exact division that will own BioCatch. On the day the sale was announced, BioCatch's own blog admitted 'we are not winning this fight,' pointing to fraud losses, scam attempts, mule accounts, and victim counts that keep rising every year. Andrew Torre, Visa's value-added services president, estimates over $1 trillion a year in global scams and account takeovers. The Nasdaq 2026 Financial Crime Report found $4.4 trillion moved through illicit channels last year, up 42% in two years. Mastercard closed a $2.65 billion purchase of Recorded Future in 2024; Visa bought Featurespace in December 2024. The deal still requires regulatory approval and is expected to close by the end of Visa's fiscal second quarter of 2027. tbh, the fraud crisis is real, but nobody asked if we want the payment layer to become a surveillance layer
