Turns out Lionel Messi has Brazilian roots. According to research by Italian historian Fiorenzo Santini, one of his great-grandparents was born in São Paulo in the early 1900s. The family lived in the interior of São Paulo before moving to Argentina around 1905. The original surname, Coccettini, was later registered as Cuccittini, and the family settled in Rosario.
