The Bangladeshi population in India has shown steady growth over the years. In 2000 it stood at 5.5 million, then rose to 5.8 million in 2001. The numbers continued to climb, reaching 6.1 million in 2002, 6.4 million in 2003, and 6.7 million in 2004. By 2005 the figure was at 7.0 million, followed by 7.2 million in 2006, 7.4 million in 2007, and 7.6 million in 2008. The population increased further to 7.8 million in 2009, 8.0 million in 2010, 8.2 million in 2011, 8.3 million in 2012, 8.4 million in 2013, and finally 8.5 million in 2014.
