Pierluigi Collina 2002 World Cup final

Pierluigi Collina recalls being asked to referee the 2002 World Cup final between Brazil and Germany. He requested videos of both teams and then shut himself in his room for a day and a half. There he took notes while watching every minute of every match. His aim was to remain one step ahead and anticipate events before they unfolded. At that time such thorough preparation was quite unusual. He takes pride in the knowledge that it has since become the standard approach for referees. Collina still feels goosebumps when he remembers the ovation from the crowd. The moment he blew the final whistle he seized the ball so he could keep it as a souvenir. He still owns it.
