    Same-Sex Marriage Europe Timeline

    Here is a timeline of same-sex marriage legalization across Europe. The Netherlands began in 2001. Belgium followed in 2003. Spain came in 2005. Norway approved it in 2009, as did Sweden that same year. Iceland began in 2010 and Portugal did the same. Denmark joined in 2012. France legalized it in 2013. Great Britain did so in 2014. Ireland followed in 2015, along with Luxembourg. Finland came in 2017, as did Germany and Malta. Austria began in 2019. Northern Ireland approved it in 2020. Switzerland did the same in 2022, as did Slovenia. Andorra started in 2023. Estonia followed in 2024, along with Greece. Liechtenstein will begin in 2025. Source: Pew Research Center
