    NGC 2170 Angel Nebula

Does the view resemble an artwork created by hand or an actual image taken through a telescope? This cosmic display of abstract beauty formed by forces in space shows the dusty cloud NGC 2170, widely recognized as the Angel Nebula, positioned prominently near the middle of the frame. It glows by bouncing light from intense nearby stars. Together with it appear several blue tinted reflective clouds, one region that shines red due to emissions, plenty of dark lanes that block light, and a varied collection of stars in many colors. Just as artists pick ordinary objects for non-representational pieces, the mix of gases, particles, and bright objects seen here occurs regularly inside huge areas where stars are actively forming. Such an area sits inside the constellation known as the Unicorn or Monoceros. The large molecular cloud called Mon R2 lies surprisingly near to us, with estimates placing it around 2400 light years distant. Because of that closeness the entire scene shown would stretch more than 60 light years from one side to the other. Credit for the image together with copyright goes to Jason Marriott.
