Mali drops French as official language

@urdjakademiksMALI HAS ABOLISHED FRENCH AS AN OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Mali ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฑ has officially changed the status of its languages, replacing French, which was an official language, with 13 national languages, among them Bambara, Tamasheq and Songhai. The National Transitional Council approved this change unanimously today, with 122 votes for and none against. This decision gives effect to the 2023 Constitution, which elevated the national languages to the rank of official languages of the country. French will remain the working language of the administration. The 13 languages mentioned in the law are Bambara (Bamanankan), Bomu, Bozo, Dogon, Fula (Fulfulde), Hassaniya, Mamara, Malinke (Maninkakan), Soninke, Songhai, Senufo (Syenara), Tamasheq and Khassonke. The legislators explained that these changes aim to prevent any discrimination against speakers of these languages. The text was revised after the Constitutional Court requested, earlier this year, clearer wording. This change marks an official break with the official-language status granted to French, in favor of the languages spoken by the majority of Malians.
