    Mary River turtle algae shell

@anderson_joshuaThere's a freshwater turtle in Australia whose shell can end up carpeted in algae, and the result looks less like an animal and more like a small patch of green drifting along. It's the Mary River turtle, and its home is Queensland's Mary River. The plant growth on the shell is what gives it that floating-garden quality, though the turtle underneath is very much alive. The looks are only part of the story. These turtles have specialised cloacal structures that let them take oxygen straight out of the water, and that adaptation is what allows them to stay submerged for long stretches when conditions suit. The species is classified as endangered, which makes the whole thing feel more fragile than curious. Nature does have a habit of turning plain survival equipment into something worth stopping for. If one went past you on the water, would the turtle read as a turtle, or would your brain file it under tiny island and move on?

    About this photo

The focus is on river turtles in their natural habitat. The turtles are swimming in water, and their shells are covered in lush green algae and plants, making them look like mini islands. The mood is natural and fascinating, highlighting a unique aspect of wildlife. A notable detail is the vibrant greenery growing on the turtles' backs, creating a striking visual.
