@kimonWhat Aligarh does with a man alone in a room is the thing I keep coming back to. Hansal Mehta's 2015 film gives us Professor Ramchandra Siras, played by Manoj Bajpayee, and lets him sit there with a drink while Lata Mangeshkar's "Aapki Nazron Ne Samjha" plays, and he sings along to it by himself. No monologue, no big speech. For minutes on end the song is basically the only company he has, and everything in his face says heartbreak, exposure, deep isolation. That's the performance doing the work instead of the writing 🍿 Everything around that scene earns it too. Siras is a gay man, and his private life gets dragged into public after someone secretly films him with another man. What follows is humiliation, discrimination, and his job gone. Rajkummar Rao comes in as Deepu Sebastian, a journalist who investigates the case and starts documenting Siras's story. Somewhere in that process an unexpected bond forms between them, built on trust and empathy rather than romance, and it's the clearest picture of what it takes to recognize someone's humanity when the world around them refuses to. Mehta built the whole thing on the real life of Professor Siras, and the film keeps returning to loneliness, dignity, and how much being yourself can cost. Pure cinema, and a heartbreaking one about having the freedom to live and to love without carrying fear around 💔🏳️‍🌈
