@massimo_bostonBears hold muscle and bone strength better than we do while lying still for months, and that is the detail scientists keep coming back to. Hibernation is the whole mechanism: metabolism and heart rate drop hard during winter so energy lasts when food runs out. No eating, no drinking, no stepping out of the den for the entire stretch. Stored body fat covers the fuel side, and the body recycles its own waste products to keep going without water. Then temperatures climb, food shows up again, and bears leave the den to eat and rebuild what they spent. For us that kind of survival would be brutally hard, which is exactly why the biology gets studied, muscle preservation included, with human health as the bigger question. So picture the option of sleeping straight through the cold season. Would you take it? tbh
