@anderson_joshuaIt's the mother polar bear that stays with me. She raises her cubs in the frozen Arctic, which counts as one of the coldest, harshest places on Earth, and she does it while passing down every skill they'll need to make it in that wilderness. That environment alone would be enough. But these bears are built for it. A layer of insulating fat and thick fur hold in body heat when the cold would otherwise win. Enormous paws turn them into powerful swimmers and let them cover snow and ice without trouble. What worries me is what's happening to the ice. Arctic sea ice keeps declining, and that puts real pressure on polar bears when it comes to finding food and holding onto their habitat. So when I think about strength, it isn't just power. Real strength is making it through when the odds are stacked against you. Do you count polar bears among nature's most extraordinary animals?
