    Chariots Of Fire 1924

@yuna_yThe movie that keeps getting sold as a patriotic slow-mo highlight reel is actually about refusal, and I need people to sit with that. Start with Harold Abrahams. He isn't chasing a medal so much as he's pushing back against an England that won't fully let a Jewish son in. That hunger to belong isn't a flaw in the writing, it's the whole point. Meanwhile Eric Liddell simply will not run on the Sabbath, and the film never asks him to soften that. Two engines, neither one negotiable. Which is why calling it the British Rocky is almost right. Same underdog spine, better tailoring, and accents that could cut glass. But where Rocky is about going the distance, this one is about what you refuse to give up. And that beach sequence should be ridiculous on paper. Overcast sky, freezing water, grown men in period underwear, and then Vangelis drops that pulse and suddenly running looks like something closer to prayer. Here's the part that gets under my skin: the film says the Establishment is small-minded, that faith can be non-negotiable, and that a Jewish athlete's drive to belong is not a character defect. Then it dresses all of that in Union Jacks and slow motion so the awards crowd wouldn't flinch. The wrapping is conservative. The spine is pure refusal. More radical than it ever gets credit for. 1924, two British runners, not friends, barely sharing a frame, and the film still makes them rhyme. It closes on a funeral and then cuts back to the beach, so you feel that the glory was already gone before anyone crossed a line. Looks like a victory lap. Reads like a eulogy with wings. 4.5/5 #England
