OpenAI pulled GPT-6.1 Astra entirely rather than put out something that fell short of its safety bar, and that choice lands differently than a pushed-back launch date. Capability spent years as the only scoreboard that mattered in the frontier race. Now the question is whether labs will actually bin powerful systems they can't keep under control, and if that becomes normal, the whole ranking system shifts. As the quote goes: intelligence without predictability isn't much of a product.
