@not_a_charmBacha bazi literally translates to boy play or playing with boys, an illegal practice in Afghanistan where adolescent and prepubescent boys face exploitation, enslavement, and sexual and physical abuse from powerful men who use them as status symbols. These victims are known as Dancing Boys. Since women are banned from dancing in the country, wealthy men turn to boys for gratification and to bypass mandated gender segregation. The boys are forced into women's clothing, wearing bells on their ankles and makeup on their faces, then compelled to sing and dance at private gatherings before being raped. They endure systematic sadistic sexual and physical abuse and suffer severe psychological trauma from this exploitation. Although the ruling Taliban prohibits bacha bazi, a 2023 U.S. State Dept. report described a pattern of sexual slavery by the Taliban and noted that incidents have increased. Maybe that explains why Taliban authorities reported zero trafficking investigations, prosecutions, or convictions in 2024. Afghanistan ranks as one of the world's most corrupt nations according to the global corruption index. This perverted practice of Dancing Boys is so entrenched in Afghan culture that even the Taliban are ignoring it...or partaking. Source: Daily Mail / Writer: Marie

    About this photo

The focus is on two people, a man and a young person, in a dimly lit room. The man, wearing a turban and vest, is reaching out to touch the young person's head. The young person, in a red shirt, looks down with a somber expression. The mood is intimate and serious, with a candid, documentary style. The man's turban and the red fabric the young person is leaning on are visually notable.
