@scarlett_sThe share of English speakers in Spain has grown steadily over the past quarter century. In 2000 the figure stood at roughly 8.5 percent of the total population. By 2001 it had reached around 9.0 percent, then 9.5 percent in 2002 and 10.0 percent in 2003. The upward trend continued with 10.5 percent in 2004, 11.0 percent in 2005, 11.5 percent in 2006, and 12.0 percent in 2007. Figures stood at 12.5 percent in 2008, 13.0 percent in 2009, 13.5 percent in 2010, and 14.0 percent in 2011. The proportion rose further to 15.0 percent in 2012, 16.0 percent in 2013, 17.0 percent in 2014, and 18.0 percent in 2015. It then climbed to 19.0 percent in 2016, 20.0 percent in 2017, 21.0 percent in 2018, and 22.0 percent in 2019. A slight dip occurred in 2020 when the share fell to about 21.5 percent. Recovery followed with 22.5 percent in 2021, 23.5 percent in 2022, 24.5 percent in 2023, and 25.5 percent in 2024. Projections indicate the number will reach around 26.0 percent in 2025 and 26.5 percent in 2026. Note that these are estimates of the percentage of the total population with functional or proficient English, mainly as a second language. Spain shows moderate English proficiency overall, with clearer gains visible among younger generations and in popular tourist destinations. Levels remain higher in major urban centers and among people under 35. The data draws from the EF English Proficiency Index, Eurobarometer surveys,
