How did we actually get to a place where everything is plugged into the cloud? Threadguy lays out the full inventory of this madness, listing televisions, microwaves, refrigerators, Teslas, garage clickers, Dyson toothbrushes, computers, phones, Google Home devices, and 8sleep mattresses as if none of them should be connected. Mert draws a hard line in the sand by stating there is no reason your smart fridge should be connected to the internet, calling the whole situation absurd while acknowledging that universal connectivity theoretically benefits consumers. Yet he identifies a very specific type of engineer who only buys non-electric cars, owns guns, and basically doesn't trust any device ever. This archetype has been vindicated by current trends, even though Mert notes he is still too young for that level of skepticism himself. The older types of like 40 year olds with like the neck beard types are the ones who have been extremely vindicated by how things turned out.
