Kevin Durant is drawing a sharp line between an MVP award and a championship ring, arguing the individual honor carries more weight because of control. He points out that there is only one MVP trophy handed out each year. While he acknowledges rings are incredible team accomplishments, he insists everyone wants to be MVP. The difference lies in how much influence you actually have over the outcome. With a championship ring, so many variables sit outside your control: teammates, coaching, health, matchups, execution, and luck. An MVP award offers a little bit more control in your hands since it relies more directly on individual performance. Kevin Durant speaks from experience since he has secured both honors himself.
