Nick Kyrgios posted a direct message on Instagram to address failing a drug test in Mallorca after testing positive for cocaine. He states he made a huge mistake and takes full responsibility without making excuses, though he offers context about the last few years of injuries that have taken an enormous toll on his physical and mental health. The tennis player explains that his body has not been able to do what his mind expects and that accepting he is near the end of his career has been harder than he ever imagined. He notes that letting go of something that was his entire life is one of the hardest things he has had to face, admitting he felt powerless and alone at times. Despite this background, he emphasizes that none of it excuses what he did. Kyrgios apologizes to his fans, family, sponsors, and everyone close to him, saying above all he is sorry to the kids who follow him because he knows the example this sets and he is deeply disappointed in himself. As a wake-up call, he announced that over the next 28 days he will step away from social media and public life while he focuses on getting better. He asks people to respect his privacy during that time and most importantly the privacy of his family, ending with a promise to do the work and come back better.
