Residency in Japan now comes with a much steeper checklist. Under the new legislation, foreigners have to pull in more than the average Japanese income, show real proficiency in the language, and cover an entry fee that jumped twenty times over. The laws are being described as making it significantly harder for non-citizens to settle there.
