Wiped out in the Chihuahuan Desert some 160 years back, bison were brought home by Mexico. And the land answered fast. Within months the ecosystem itself came back. Bovines turn out to be the whole engine down there: they rebuild the soil, cut down on wildfire danger, and give biodiversity a boost.
